Module 1: Fundamentals of Social Impact Measurement (Micro-Credential)
In this module embrace the concepts that underpin a successful, impactful, business aligned and resilient social impact strategy or program.
- Understand core concepts such as “standards”, “frameworks”, “inductive” vs. “deductive” reasoning, “logic model, “theory of change”, “social value”, “social impact” “collective impact”, “partners/all people affected”, “partners/all people affected, “program evaluation” and “social impact measurement”, and introduce the different iterations of each core concept.
Explain some reasons for why these iterations exist (i.e. language that resonates with specific sectors, etc.). - Examine the concept and value of a Theory of Change.
- Explore the current state of measurement and impact reporting.
- Integrate the core concepts, explain their iterations, and why these iterations exist.
- Describe the diversity of perspectives on impact measurement across a variety of vectors, including:
- Qualitative vs Quantitative approaches;
- Nonprofits, charities, social enterprises, and corporations;
- Methodologies such as Common Approach, Developmental Evaluation, Collective Impact, Social Return on Investment, UN SDG Impact Standard framework, Task Force on Inequality and Socially-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD) etc.
- Examine various social impact frameworks and standards within the context of a continuum of options.
- Contrast the definition and use of an impact thesis, logic model, reverse-logic model, theory of change, outcomes mapping, and ecosystem mapping.
- Discuss the importance of standardized language within the organization for social impact. The learner must make explicit decisions on what vocabulary to use in their organizational context and help partners/all people affected adopt this vocabulary.
- Explain ESG and impact as a spectrum, and identify the difference in identifying ESG approaches to materiality vs impact-focused approaches (Theory of Change).
- Understand social impact related concepts, theories, frameworks and standards including the difference between quantitative vs qualitative, ESG vs impact, Theory of change & logic model frameworks vs standards methods vs methodologies, and current and emerging voluntary standards and regulations, and associated requirements that guide social impact reporting.
- Describe the “use case” for various contexts of social impact data (corporates, non profits, governments and asset managers).
- Discuss this at a summary level.
- What is depth of impact, counterfactual, contribution analysis?
- Provide examples
- Summarize the current and emerging voluntary standards and regulations, and associated requirements that guide the future of social impact reporting.

** Applicants for a discount must first complete the request for discount form on the website by identifying the class of discount and uploading the required information.
Applicants will receive an email advising them of the outcome of their application and if successful providing them with a code. Applicants must register for the course and apply the code to receive the discounts. Discounts have no cash value and are non-transferable. Only one discount can apply to a course or program. |
Cancellation Policy:
Registered but can’t attend?
Registrations are transferable to other associates within your organization or can be transferred toward a USMC SR&S course within the same business year.
Cancellations 1 month from the course are 100% refundable. Cancellations less than 1 month but more than 2 weeks receive a 50% refund of fees paid. Confirmed registrants who cancel within 2 weeks of the course date or fail to attend, will be charged 100% of the registration fee and are not entitled to a refund.
USMC reserves the right to cancel an event or any associated functions at its sole discretion. In the event of such, a full refund will be made. USMC expressly excludes any liability for any direct or indirect losses or damages howsoever arising as a result of such cancellation and will not, for example, be responsible for any travel or accommodation costs incurred.
In the event of cancellation, USMC will use reasonable actions to alert those who have booked to attend an event and details of any cancellation will be posted on the course website page. Attendees are responsible for checking this information prior to the event.
Attendee name substitutions are allowed up to the day of the course.
